About Sayso Play

A free daily picture-guessing game. A new puzzle every day — can you identify the idiom from the AI-generated image?

What is Sayso?

Sayso Play is a free daily word puzzle game, but with a visual twist. Each day, a brand-new image is published that depicts a common English idiom, saying, or proverb. Your goal is to look at the picture and figure out which phrase it represents — before your guesses run out.

The game is designed to be quick, but surprisingly tricky. Sayings like "the ball is in your court" or "kill two birds with one stone" look very different when rendered as a literal image!

How to Play

Each puzzle starts with a partially-hidden mosaic of tiles covering the image. Here's how it works:

  1. Look at the image. A grid of tiles covers most of the picture, revealing only a portion of it. Study the visible details.
  2. Type your guess. Enter what idiom or saying you think the image represents and submit your answer.
  3. Get feedback. Your guess is checked against the answer. A correct guess ends the puzzle in a win. An incorrect guess reveals more of the image.
  4. Keep going. You have up to 5 guesses. More of the image is uncovered with each wrong answer, giving you more clues.
  5. See the reveal. Whether you win or run out of guesses, the full image and the answer are shown at the end. Come back tomorrow for a new puzzle!

Scoring and streaks

Sayso tracks your performance over time. Your score for each puzzle is based on how many guesses it took you to solve it — fewer guesses is better. You can earn a perfect score by solving the puzzle on the first guess with most of the image still hidden.

Your streak counts how many consecutive days you've played and solved a puzzle. Streaks reset if you miss a day or fail to solve the puzzle. Sign in with Google or email to save your streak across devices so you never lose your progress.

The stats sheet shows your full history: total games played, win rate, guess distribution, and your last 7 days of play.

Tips and strategies

Start with the literal details

AI-generated images for idioms tend to depict the literal meaning of the phrase. If you see a bird in the image, think about sayings that involve birds. If there's a stone, look for stone-related idioms. Common objects in the image are almost always meaningful.

Think about the category

Each puzzle has a category label (such as "Animals," "Nature," or "Actions") that narrows down the type of saying. Use this to guide your thinking before you make a guess.

Use your guesses strategically

You have 5 guesses. Each wrong guess reveals more of the image. If you're not confident, it can be worth making a deliberate wrong guess to uncover more tiles and gain new information before committing to your real answer.

Look at colors and settings

The background, setting, and color palette of the image often carry meaning. An outdoor farm setting hints at country sayings; a courtroom setting might suggest legal or justice idioms; bright sunshine often accompanies positive or optimistic expressions.

Frequently asked questions

How often are new puzzles published?

One new puzzle is published every day at midnight. The puzzle is the same for all players worldwide on that day.

Do I need an account to play?

No — you can play as a guest without creating an account. However, your streak and stats are only saved to your device when playing as a guest. Creating a free account (via Google or email) syncs everything to the cloud so you can play on multiple devices without losing progress.

Can I play old puzzles?

At the moment, only today's puzzle is available. We're working on an archive feature that will let Premium subscribers replay past puzzles.

What kinds of sayings are used?

Puzzles feature a wide range of common English expressions: idioms ("bite the bullet"), proverbs ("actions speak louder than words"), figures of speech ("the elephant in the room"), and everyday sayings ("the tip of the iceberg"). The difficulty varies by puzzle — some are very well-known, others are more obscure.

How are the images made?

Each image is generated using DALL-E 3, OpenAI's AI image model. A human curator reviews and approves every puzzle before it goes live to make sure the image is a fair and recognisable representation of the saying.

Is Sayso free?

Yes. One puzzle per day is completely free, with optional advertisements. A Premium subscription removes ads and unlocks bonus features.
